The CPS features an electrical power output of 100 kWel (net), which is controllable in the range between 30 and 100 kWel. Depending on the version, the thermal power produced by the exhaust gas is 210 to 520 kWth. In accordance with the thermal exhaust-gas power, the exhaust-gas temperatures are between 270 °C (210 kWth) and 650 °C (520 kWth). With an electrical efficiency of up to 30% (net) and an overall efficiency of up to 98%, the CPS permits a high return on investment and lower operating costs in many applications.
For breweries, the CPS is an interesting alternative to conventional firing of a process-steam boiler. Depending on the amount of steam needed, direct firing of the waste heat boiler, direct firing of an additional pass or steam generation via a burner with air preheating is possible. That last version also permits retrofitting existing boiler systems with the CPS.
In brickyards, in-house electricity generation can be supplemented by direct use of the very clean exhaust gas (NOx <10 ppm, CO <15 ppm, 18% residual oxygen by volume) in the accessible oven systems without requiring post-treatment. Combined electricity and heat generation achieves an overall efficiency exceeding 90%. By connecting several CPS in parallel the demand can be easily met by time or capacity required.
In automotive paint shops, electrification of solvent-laden exhaust air is an innovative solution for energy management optimization. The exhaust air fuels the CPS in this process, and the waste heat is used directly for paint drying.
A CPS is often more advantageous than a conventional gas engine in combined heat and power (CHP) systems due to the CPS’s overall efficiency, fuel flexibility, low pollutant emissions, high availability inherent in the system, low maintenance effort and cost. Combining CPS with thermeco2 high-temperature heat pumps from the Dürr company thermea often makes fuel utilization values of up to 250% possible – thereby permitting highly efficient energy plants.
In addition to presenting the CPS, Dürr’s division Clean Technology Systems will be exhibiting highly efficient heat pumps employing the climate-friendly refrigerant CO2 and Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) systems for electrifying waste heat at the internal Open House fair from 12 to 15 May 2014.
